Soloist Insights: Tessa Petersen on Beethoven's 'Triple Concerto'

Violinist Tessa Petersen shares what makes Beethoven's 'Triple Concerto' such a special work—from its intimate chamber music spirit to the extraordinary musical dialogue between the three soloists and orchestra.

The Triple Concerto is chamber music on a grand scale! In this innovative work for its time, Beethoven cleverly uses the classic piano trio combination as his soloists, which then allows him a wealth of different textures and colours for developing the drama. The orchestra can be in dialogue with the trio, or very often themes are handed over and developed from one soloist to the next, like a musical relay. I am enjoying the collaboration with my colleagues Terence and Heleen and very much looking forward to putting together and performing this wonderful work with maestro Umberto Clerici and the DSO.
