Introducing Anna Leese - soprano in 'Mahler's Resurrection'

Waiting until the final movement may require patience, but for soprano Anna Leese it brings a unique reward — entering a sound world already alive with energy, and carrying it toward Mahler’s vision of hope and renewal.

The soprano enters only in the final movement. How does it feel to step into the symphony at such a pivotal moment?

Stepping in for the final movement happens surprisingly often for sopranos.Because of our high tessitura, we are frequently saved for the end to heighten the suspense. In Handel’s Messiah, for example, we sit on stage for nearly an hour before announcing that Mary will give birth to Jesus, and in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony we also appear only in the final movement, singing as a child. It requires patience, especially for those of us who usually go to bed early! But the reward is that we step into the energy and momentum that the orchestra – and, in this case, also the choir – have already built.

Mahler’s setting of the ‘Resurrection’ text carries profound spiritual meaning. What does this music express to you personally?

In these unpredictable and challenging times, when the world seems to change so rapidly, we are all in need of hopeful messages. Regardless of personal beliefs, the idea of resurrection represents hope for humanity – forgiveness, renewal, and the possibility of becoming better versions of ourselves.

Performing with two orchestras and a massive choir is a rare experience. What makes this collaboration special?

Standing before such a large ensemble is exhilarating – almost an out-of-body experience. For a moment it feels as if you exist in a timeless space shaped entirely by sound. Dunedin’s Town Hall, with its beautiful wooden interior and remarkable acoustic, is the perfect place for this extraordinary musical event.
