30 Years of Music with the DSO

London-based Dunedin-born Jonathan Lemalu, bass soloist in the 'DSO 60th Gala Concert' reflects on more than 30 years of collaboration with the DSO, describing it as a constant source of musical growth, inspiration and a “jewel in Dunedin’s musical landscape”. A heartfelt birthday tribute to an orchestra that continues to nurture musicians and audiences alike.

Born and educated in Dunedin and now based in London, I have happily crossed paths with the DSO in numerous performances (including world premières by Anthony Ritchie). The DSO has been a constant source of musical and personal growth and inspiration for me. My rudimentary maths says I have collaborated with the DSO in various forms for at least 30 of its years!

This orchestra is the jewel in Dunedin’s musical landscape, a shining beacon of high-class musicians and musicianship, and of nurturing and nourishing its musicians and its audiences in a wonderfully varied breadth of repertoire. Looking forward to celebrating with this extraordinary orchestra, its players, management, and its fiercely proud and loyal audience in the country's finest town hall acoustic.
