Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome
We are thrilled to present details of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 concerts.
Our year starts a little differently with All You Need Is Love, a programme of 28 of the Beatles’ greatest hits. Sharing the stage with the DSO will be stars of Dunedin’s musical theatre, along with talented contemporary music students from the University’s School of Performing Arts.
The International and Matinee Series concerts are at the heart of the orchestra’s 2023 events, and some of the highlights will be:
- The return of our eminent conductors: James Judd, Brent Stewart, Kenneth Young, and Umberto Clerici, as well as London-based conductor Simon Over (last here in 2019).
- Top soloists: internationally acclaimed tenor Simon O’Neill, mezzo-soprano Wendy Dawn Thompson, and Australian pianist Konstantin Shamray, as well as New Zealand’s own taonga pūoro specialist Ariana Tikao and up-and-coming pianist Benjamin Carter.
- DSO’s own talented musicians: the woodwinds in Dvořák’s Serenade, the strings in Mozart’s Divertimento, and DSO’s versatile Principal Trumpeter Ralph Miller as a concerto soloist
The repertoire includes many musical treasures:
- From Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 (known as the Elvira Madigan concerto)
- To Mahler’s spectacular The Song of the Earth
As well as the sweeping Romanticism of works by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Mendelssohn.
DSO is proud to showcase New Zealand repertoire. 2023 concerts include:
- Two world premières of works by local composers Anthony Ritchie and Gillian Whitehead
- Works by Brigid Bisley, Ariana Tikao, Philip Brownlee and Larry Pruden.
Other 2023 activities for the DSO include two concerts with City Choir Dunedin, the Dunedin Concerto Competition Finals, as well as our extensive range of education projects: Otago and Southland school tours, DSO Academy, Play with the Orchestra, and many collaborations with the University’s School of the Performing Arts – all helping to contribute to the country’s musical fabric.
To all our subscribers, ticket buyers, business partners, donors, funders and volunteer supporters – thank you. Your dedicated support is integral to our musical success, and we can’t wait for you to join us to experience the power of music for yourself.
We look forward to welcoming you to a DSO concert soon. Kia manahau.
